A favourite destination for many fishermen and their families was the old Lorne pier.

It was standing room only on the old wooden structure, which was built to accommodate the commercial fishing fleet, when salmon, trevally or barracouta were running.

The pier was demolished last year and a replacement costing $5 million opened on March 23rd 2007. The new pier is one of the most enlightened fishing structures in Australia. It is the same length (196m) and width as the old pier, but has a superb platform on the end, with plenty of room for recreational fishers and sightseers.

The pier was funded by the Victorian Government and is managed by the Great Ocean Road Coast Committee and the Department of Sustainability and Environment. The pier required the installation of 64 concrete pylons and the erection of more than 1300sq m of timber for the deck and fishing platform.

An estimated 30,000 manhours were involved in the construction. Demolition of the old pier required the removal of about 260 piles and more than 1200 tonnes of concrete and timber. The new pier flares out on each side at the end and it''s step-down fishing platform has rod holders.

All of this provides a selection of vantage points and levels and pedestrians no longer have to step over rods or get in the way of anglers. The original was a winter favourite when wind and rain made fishing difficult elswhere. The new one will be even more popular, given the room to catch trevally, salmon, garfish, couta, pinkie snapper and squid.

Our new pier will be a favourite haunt for fishermen and tourists for many decades to come.
